links?

I have links on my website that are irrelavent to my website theme. Is this going to hurt my rank in search engines? Could I be doing better if I was linked to similar sites like mine?

Unless you're linking to link farms or spam sites then you shouldn't be worried.

Linking to other sites no matter what type doesn't help your rankings, only links coming into you can improve your rankings.

Yup, backlinks are links pointing to your site.

Theres 2 ways:

1- create content that will be worth linking too, but takes a lot of time.
2- Buy them, you can buy links from link sales sections in webmaster forums or you can submit your site to free directories.

Yes, but better to say related.

Quality, Quality and Quality links only.
All others link exchange just a garbage. The Google algorithm is smart enough not to count them.

What is a Quality links?
Anchor text (keywords) link from the content related to your niche, from the site related to your niche.

Yes, of coures it is not a good practice! Irrelevent content is something every search engine likes to avoid.

Try to get links from sites that are relevent to the conent of your site.

It is good to have backlinks even from irrelevant sites but more better if you can manage to get from relevant sites

I wouldn't worry about it. You could always add rel="nofollow" to them if you are worried.

Generally people refer to links as what is linking out from your site and backlinks are what links into your site.

The number and relevance of backlinks matters. But, you will not get penalized for non-relevant backlinks you just wont gain much if anything.
Try to grow the links coming into your site "naturally". If you narmally get 5-8 backlinks a week, keep tyring to get that number on average.
Don't bother with recipricol links unless they benifit your users.
Try to get links from authority sites in your subject area.
As you get more and more links, let's of links from non-relevant areas are more and more "ok".
In general, links leaving your site don't have too much to do with your serps. A good rule of thumb is that if it's good for the human user of your site it's probably good with the search engine.

Hope this helps.

I'm assuming that you've probably had a swap with all link building campaign as the main part of your SE Marketing strategy.
If that's the case, and the links on your site are really nothing to do with what your site is about, then what I'd do personally is start to take those links off slowly - but over at least 3 months. And remember to replace them with good new content pages instead.

Only bad sites and link farms can hurt your rank in search engines. You must build link in related sites to get another quality backlink.

I totally agree. Its best to get quality links but irrelevant links help build your PR as well.

How do I know if a link is a quality link? And are we talking about backlinks or just links that I have on my website?

You'll be fine, just stay away from bad neighborhoods.

<admin edit>

read that, also search for bad neighborhoods, for more information.
