keyword question

How many keywords is too many? My sub pages are focused on specific topics thus the choice of keywords is easy (flowers gardens, for example). They seem to get good results. Gardening is a vast topic and my homepage ranks well for one common gardening phrase but not all. I'd like to rank well for 'gardening' but I think if I worked that word in anymore I would start sound ridiculous. How can I improve my rankings for more keywords and phases and still have my content sound coherent? I've kept my keyword meta tags to about 8 per page.

Thanks in advance,

Send a message via Yahoo to parusa619
150+ characters are too many, limit it from 15 to 150 characters in your title.

The title should be no more than 150 characters, the description 200 characters and the keywords 500 characters.

As for on page, as long as your not overdoing it, and the keywords FLOW throughout your page, you shouldnt have to worry about how many times you mention each keyword.

Figure you want to mention the keyword to be search for at least 3 times on the page.

As an seo I would suggest keeping your keyword density around 8-12 percent, but don't over due it, even 2 percent would be good, but remember google values inbound link quality, and anchor text more then keywords on page, now msn, and yahoo is known to value the density of pages more, and keywords I would highly suggest checking out.

a keyword density checker, go to google, and see what you can find.

Whatever tool you use, be sure to also check
your competitors to get an idea about what they use.

If you want to be really exact, make sure to get weighted
keyword density (i.e. that will give a better idea if your
competitors are using their tags, e.g. title tag, correctly)

On-page SEO will only take you so far. Do the best job you can do, and if it's still not ranking high enough, then you need links.

Don't keyword stuff your text too much. Forget about measuring density, and instead use the phrase a couple of times PLUS some variations of the phrase. If your wanting to target "LA flowers" then use "LA flowers" a couple of times, but also add "L.A.", "florist", "california", "flower shop" etc onto the page. This looks more natural, which is more important than any particular keyword density.

I like every page to have it's own theme - Choose 1-2 good phrases (as determined by what seems logical, and your keyword research) for each page. Choose a few less competetive phrases that are relevant, consider these "nice to have's".
Write down a list of what phrases you are targeting on each page if it isn't obvious, and don't bother targeting the same phrase on more than 2 pages.

- use these keywords and phrases in your internal links,
- use these keywords and phrases in forum posting : in your sig put such as garden flowers lists not your url and every forum change your list (more importante to post from related forum
- write articles and use anchor text with these keywords and phrases.
- if you have links from websites try to change your anchor text with the links.
-To get the best results did not change all things at the same time and specially your content try to work your off-page optimzation then test. It take time to test but it is the most valuable advice why? you will understand which is the most important factors you will give it the most important investment in time or effort or money.
