Do search engines care about how many pages a site has?

I'm wondering, do more pages help with search rankings? I'm not asking if I should split a 500 word article into five 100 word pages, though I have broken up the longer articles. The topic of my site (gardening) is wide ranging. I could probably write articles for years covering various plants, techniques, etc. I guess what I'm asking is does a site with 100's of articles get more respect from search engines just from having more pages?

Thanks in advance

More pages definately help you getting more traffic from the search engines. The avarage surfer does not type single keywords in the search box, they use search phrases, like 'where to buy red roses' instead of just 'roses', or 'red roses', and when they are looking to buy red roses in their area, they might look for 'red roses Atlanta', to give just an example.

When you have more pages with different subjects (all related to your main theme of course) the chance that search engines show your pages for certain phrases wil increase.

Most forum owners know this from experience, the more posts a forum has, the more it gets found for different searches.

Yes I would have to agree with ferre, put a blog on your website, and build the content up. I try to make 10 posts a day if I can, but it never happens cause which I put around 30 mintues to 1 hour into each post depending on how much research I have to do, or if I already know all the questions I'm writing about, but yes more pages is better

More useful content would be better in my opinion.
No point having a lot of pages with nothing in them.

You are dilute your page rank however with unique titles you will gain much more visitors and many more page views that ad agencies like.
