local search - foreign host

Hi,
I have just started to resell hosting to customers in Australia

I have 2 reseller accounts -one in Aust.
one in USA
The USA host offers the much better deal

My question - will clients with .com.au names
be featured in local search in google/yahoo
if they are hosted in USA
as effectively as sites hosted in Aust.?

Does anyone know of any information on google / yahoo sites
or from their reresentatives which will define their position on this?

Ant information will be appreciated
Namaste
Danny

If you have .com.au tld and targeting specific Australian countries, you should preferebly hosted in Australia.

this would seem logical however
I have been told .com.au will come up in local search
irregardless of where hosted
and was after an authroritive opinion from a google/yahoo site
do you know where I can look?

For getting live link in your signature you need to contribute this board with minimum 50 posts, probably you have not checked their FAQ, I have crossed that mark that is the reason I got the url in my sign. Thanks, namaste.

Hi Danny,

If you want to be found in Australia, you need a .com.au OR a .com hosted in Aus. Either of these will be fine.

However, it may be there is some hidden algo that gives a little bit of extra weight to .com.au sites that are also hosted in Australia. Remember, there are over 100 factors going into Google's algo, probably a lot more. I have no proof of this theory whatsoever.

But...

What happens if you want to be found in google.com.au (AU site only) AND google.co.nz (NZ sites only)?
You would think registering a .com.au site and hosting it in New Zealand would give you the best of both worlds?

We found this is not the case - a .com.au hosted in New Zealand is considered an Australian site ONLY.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to host Aus sites in the USA, so long as the customer understands it won't be as quick as an Aussie host. Your prices will probably reflect this.
