How about PDF tagging? It is used in Accessibility to add semantic meaning to the DOM so why not Search Engines? Anyone know?

I've never seen a pdf file ranked well so I wouldn't know but I assume its the same as everything else.

yes.
if any search engine bot can reach them, count them as indexed unless they are listed in robots.txt

Yes but what about about PDF tagging? If they are used then there is no reason why PDF files can match HTML pages.

Personally, I'm really reluctant to click on a PDF in the search results. Unless I have no other choice, I would opt for the HTML result every time because of the overhead of opening a PDF.

That's just me. I think HTML is more clickable than PDF.

That would be why! Looks like no one here or the web has looked into Tagging I am convinced will help becuase it adds accessible semantic meaning to the content.

Google does not favor html above pdf files. When your pdf file is relevant to a certain search phrase it wil show, when indexed.

People who have PDF's up have no other choice! Few people use PDF tagging and if supported there is no reason Google would favor PDF imo.

Sadly I do not really have the time or interest to see if PDF tagging works but if you want yours to rank please do find out how you get on with them.

Dunno if you noticed, but the #1 and #2 spots in that search result are both pdf's from my site, no tagging was implied there, I don't even know what 'tagging' means. All I know is that Google does not discriminate pdf files in their serps and that they do index them when they crawl a site with pdf's on them. And I did't even add them to my site map.

Ahh yes sorry I agree! (going to clean my spectacles!) If you want those PDF pages to rank higher I am convinced PDF tagging will work (if not now then in the future) because it adds semantic meaning where you can outline HTML tags in the PDF content. Adobe Acrobat can add the tagging for you and I think it maybe worth your time looking into it as no one ales seems to be.
