high ranking in engines and meta tags, bots ect

I of course do all my codes myself and have very high listings in all searches in the words I pick. Sadly how many really look up things like facepaint and such. I have a business site that ranks high in things not so fun and yet they work well to get people there for the ones that do ads with me so that is good in ways.
I can however say that if you look up the most searched words and you notice your sites do not have a thing to do with them it is sad. grin. At times I get tons of hits on articles I write due to times and those things being new to some after they are old to me.
I tried the pay per click thing over 7 years ago and it got me nothing and tried the traffic rip offs too so i could do alerts on them first hand.
Seems when it comes to some sites is it just that what I do is not liked or of use? Anyone have advise for this?

Take the time to find out exactly what phrase(s) people actually use to search for the primary topic of each page you are writing about, by researching your target audience and by using keyword tools.

Thanks and yes on my magazine site I have done that and it goes well but, sadly on a facepaint site few seem to look up even words or phrases. I have now ranked high on the other things there but, also not many look for the other odd things there. I am so against adding pages or such that I find lame for hits but, I always hoped there was something that would fit in with it all. Sadly the things I find fun and put there do not get hits or searched. Know what I mean. I hate to link my site from my business site but, today I did a bit of that out of wanting hits. I can only hope I find a better way so I can take that off before they connect that the mag and site there is all one person and find it is me. I am not so liked by some people that are maybe danger to me.

Only way to get higher rank is to works on content and promotion of your site.
As Cricket already pointed research what are most common words that people search and then try to optimize your site for such a words and more import do a promotion.Submit to directories, ask for linking to your site from other relevant sites etc..
It is hard works but the results are always sweet after a couple months.
