Finding Relevancy (Back Links)

[I know there's some debate whether a back link needs to come from a relevant site, but for the sake of this discussion let's just assume it's important.]

Using Google's "related:mydomain.com" search for my domain turns up a number of software sites. I make a flowcharting program, so that's understandable. But "software" is a broad subject.

Doing the same on my competitors turns up similar results.

I had always assuming I needed to seek out "flowcharting" related sites to find relevant back links. Does this mean the relevancy door is wide open for me to seek out any back links related to software, instead of the tightly focused world of flowcharting?

Yeah you can. It's still related, it's not like you are exchanging links with celebrity and movie review site, it's still a related niche to yours.

You also need to think about your target audience..let's say you have a site on high blood pressure, it makes sense to go out and exchange links with diabetes sites then because people who have diabetes are likely to have High blood pressure and so on.

If it works for your target customers and also brings back links, I wouldn't worry about angering the google gods.

Yes it does sound like the relevancy range just opended up quite-a-bit for you. If it was my website I would probably accept links from directory pages with these categories-

high-tech, business, graphic design, flash, web, software, retailers, marketing.

Accepting links but with a careful eye to keep your link away from sites you'd rather not be associated with.

John had an interesting post about the "myth" of link relevency.
http://www.v7n.com/forums/seo-forum/...relevancy.html

I thought it made a compelling arguement that domain trust is much more important than link relevency.

check it out.
