How to target geographical regions?

Over at the "Casino Affiliate" camp, there's webmasters who have lost their US revenue and are now focusing on foreign countries. Keep in mind these are guys who spent years developeing their content and IBLS.. What they are doing now is buying up domain names with .uk, .jp, tw. etz.. thinking that their new domain name will attract more attention..

so is this true? Is it better for an established domain to change their traffic demographics OR start over with another domain with a region specific extension??

If I had my domain >>>www.mydomain.jp<< and wanted to concentrate on japan how would I market to japanese?

Any ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I find focusing on my own country (UK) works well to get traffic from Google.com and google.co.uk. It really depends on your target audience but I wouldn't worry too much about setting up different domain names for each local search engine.

Thanks Kevin, but my question is how you focuss on your UK region. Do you depend on local directories? local blogs? or keyword phrases with "UK" in them? Local adds? or is there another way for the big G to prioritize your site locally?

I'd use the keywords within the site rather than specifically looking for links from local websites.

- it is very important that to get your domain name and your hosting in the country that you will target,
if your target audience is from uk = take a web site from uk and host it in uk.

- another thing, that even if your web site language is in english, it is better to change content because there are many word used in america did not used in uk, australia, or other country that speak english, every region have their specificity, you did not change all content but add them
example: program, programme, ....
