I found out this morning that a university in America (Glasscock School of Continuing Studies) is offering a course in SEO SEO Course

When stock market went bust in 2000, lots of so called "programmers" lost their jobs. They switched to SEO business and proclaimed themselves experts. They use fancy technical terms and try to create a science out of scratch. But, in essence, those self proclaimed SEO consultants are not of much help. If you don't understand how to manage business in real life, there is no way you can do that in Internet. This thing is much more general.

IMO "90% of seo is not a seo"...not professional type of seo.

seo is a keep growing field, and every seo master need to keep up with trend, lots of works to do just to well rank a single site/keyword. and not all site convert well.

I believe SEO is a difficult career to set a qualification for. Primarily because there is so many variables involved and many SEO's will disagree with one another on the techniques used, as it is not an exact science. Setting up a valid course can also be a challenge as the importance of the different variables changes so frequently. Asking any SEO today what the best personal profile is for an SEO and you will get different answers from all of them. Do you need technical skill? Or do you need no skills at all? I personally believe that the best qualification any prospective SEO can have is the right personality. Unfortunately that cannot be studied at university,...

But lets try to be objective about the attempt made here by the university... It will work to create credibility to companies, as many of them have no idea what SEO truly is. Also as far as I know universities have specific routes that needs to be followed to approve courses. This causes a big problem in creating a valid course as it tends to be outdated at the time it gets approved. A person creating courses for a university should rather look at subject matter that will teach a specific way of thought, rather than topics like they have on their list.

Believe me, the good SEO need a lot of technical skills.
Computer since, programming (html, php, java and so on…), design skills, webhosting knowledge, copywriting, marketing and some other could help you a lot with SEO.

Regarding the University course may be it is funny now, but instead of jumping and make fun, just think for a second.

There is 2 ways to learn something, including SEO.
One – with your time - Do it yourself. You need to spend a lot of time and learn from your mistakes. This is how most SEO pro did it until now.
Another – with your money – when somebody point you to the right direction and teach you some skills. Yes, you pay some money, but you save a lot of time.

So, it is really depend form what they going to teach (yes, from the course description this one is not so advanced) and also how knowledgeable the guy who is going to do this course. If Arron Wall or John Scott will do University course for $400 are you going to jump on it? I would.

Not just a course, you can make the full University program for SEO.
One course will teach programming, another will teach basics of SE algorithm, another – marketing, and so on…

It will be outdated before you finish the course.

I come from a technical background as an application developer and would probably agree with you, however some of the best SEO's in the world did not enter the industry with any technical background. SEO is an umbrella under marketing, specifically under search engine marketing.

I have nothing against the school that offers SEO course. SEO appears to have a bad reputation that its every effort to expand on the mainstream educational system is jeered upon.
