Does having out-bound links on my homepage hurt me in any way?

Also....

I've started spending about an hour a day submitting my site to just about any motorcycle related directory I can find. Most of these sites don't have a very good Alexa rank but have very relevant content. So far I haven't been buying any links but plan on looking into it. Am I wasting my time with these free directories?

If outgoing links point to the good, reputable sites related to your subject it would never hurt you, it can even help you.

No, any link related to your subject is good. If it is free it even better. But directories are not the only way to get the links.

Thanks

One other thing has been annoying me when I check my Alexa traffic ranking it never has a picture of my site. It always says coming soon but never does. Am I forgetting to submit my site to something? When you say other ways to get links do you mean submitting articles?

It is one of them.

And don’t worry about Alexa. Picture will come. But traffic that they showing are far, far not accurate. They are showing traffic only from people who installed Alexa toolbar.

Yes, article submission is one way to get links. Forums posting, press release submission, directory submission, comment posting on blogs and link exchange with trusted site can also give you links.

Yes. Try limiting your outgoing links to just the ones that are most relevant and you need on there.

Thank You

Very true post. Just like to point out that you need to differentiate between contextual links and other links. Contextual outbound links definitely helps if it is themed and targetted to the topic of the page the links are located on.

It will hurt you if you have OBL's that is not related to your site. Your OBL's must be relevant to your site.

I disagree with your opinion that it will "hurt" your rankings. It is just better to have well themed OBL. Let me explain why I disagree,...
http://www.phorum.co.za/viewtopic.php?p=947
This page is themed for "Game Lodges & Reserves In South Africa" but ranks #2 for the search "online marketing forum" south africa
This is proof that OBL's are extremely powerful atm, also when looking at the tons of keyword Wikipedia is ranking for.

its okay having it on your homepage but it should look nice on your site and not just like you just put it like trash...but the thing will be you should only have i guess 50 OBL and not more than that...it is much better to have a lot of IBL rather than to have a lot of OBL...

I said it isn't bad, I certainly didn't say that it can make you outrank others in more competitive keywords.

Outbound links are not bad but they arent good. You have to choose carfully who you are linking to. Less than 100 links out total.

If you have to link to sites that you feel is from a bad neighborhood adding nofollow tags to those links should help you to protect your site.

If you know the site is bad why link to them. If your website has been around a long time and is consistent with the search engines then you really shouldnt have problems. You can always take out the link if your linking to a bad neighborhood.

Really? I didn't know that. I don't know anybody who has an Alexa toolbar installed. No wonder that the traffic from Alexa doesn't match my stats! Thank you for this valuable info.

Alexa rankings are completely bogus. It lists my site in the us rankings in the top 60,000. I know that isn't true.
