It varies a lot. I usually buy when I see a good deal, so if there are 1000 good deals i find this month then i'll be spending that much but havent found much lately.

I don't buy links. I try to get it for free. For me PR has less value now, I prefer to get more traffic than having links with site that has high PR.

i take all those free links, its o.k to wait for long approval of links, one traits of an SEO is to be patient.

I haven't tried buying links because, for basic off-page optimization, you must do free submissions first, you can also get PR and backlinks from that free submission but you can also get more from payed submissions, but for new sites, we must do this kind of submissions first.

I just whore up free links. I've maybe spent about 40$ total. Soon im gonna be buying more quality directory links since I'm now leaning towards all the pr0 free directories being somewhat useless. Alot of them get neglected and abondoned anyway.

I spend from $100 to $500 a month. It depend what i see.
I pay:
$5 - $10 for pr 5 monthly links
up to $ 30 for pr 5 lifetime links
$25-$50 for pr 7 monthly links
up to $100 for lifetime pr 7
:agerank 6 i pay only for lifetimes if they up to $50 and if it is more than 50 other links on the page i pay no more than $30 for lifetime.
I never pay for pr4 links unless it is good directory.
I don't like to deal with montly pr6 sites because they charge $50+ a month. For the same price i can find pr7 or to pay for at least 10 pr 5 monthly pr 5 links.

The number of links to your site is not important. It is the quality of the sites from where the links are coming from that can improve your PR. If you get free links to your site, make sure they are from a good source.

The number of links to your site is not as important as the quality of the links. If you get free links to your site, make sure they come from a good quality site that has usefull content that compliments with your site.

It is not necessary to start from free submissions. I would start with quality submissions which of course is unlikely without spending.
