There is no evidence to prove that reciprocal linking is bad as long as you link to quality content, becuase it is more about
trust and not reciprocal... Is your links page useful to your audience or a collection of poo?
I love reciprocal linking.
For most commercial site reciprocal linking is not possible and you must look at other ways to promote it and it may then grow in the SERPS naturally (as long as it is a good site to begin with). If your site is not good give up and start again with a better one.
[EDIT: Additionally don't worry about your forums sign linking to poor sites becuase forum signs tend to be ignored for ranking even if there is no rel="nofollow"]
