I can't imagine why Matt Cutts would lie about something as silly as this, or even mislead us, as there would be absolutely no motive. It would serve no benefit to Google (or him) one way or the other, but you are certainly entitled to your belief. Personally, everything I have seen in this regard has been right in line with what he has said about this issue, with the exception of the testing datacenters which have been known to show different information now and then for quite some time.
But either way, no worries. Makes no difference to me. I pay attention to the serps, nothing more.
