Monitor keyword rankings

Besides DP's keyword tracker, how do you monitor keyword rankings? And if somebody, say v7n, were to launch a new keyword tracker type tool what would you want it to include?

I would use and heavily promote it in a heartbeat!

On my wish list (not sure if it is possible) would be to know which database (IP) the results were pulled from.

I use this SERP tool to check my rankings. But I also do manual checking for accurate results.

Just try it and do not like it at all. Checking tool do not use several datacenters.
It check your ranking probably only by one datacenter and give you result.
This keyword tool is simple and clear and give result from many centers:

http://www.seologs.com/dc-rank-check.html

btw

Do not uderstand still how googlerankings works.Just perform search on both site with same keywords.First site give back position 10
and second site give back result on all datacenters position 9.

In terms of features, some indication of personalization is important. For example, I'm in New Zealand, and there's 4 versions of Google I'm interested in...

www.google.co.nz (NZ sites only)
www.google.co.nz (All of web)
www.google.com (coming at it from a NZ IP address)
www.google.com (coming from a US IP address)

These results can be vastly different. Just because you aren't top 10 on google.com doesn't mean you are starved of traffic, so I like to know my rankings on these too.

Google is personalizing more, so it would be good to incorporate these features.

Also graphs - nothing illustrates a point like a good graph (See attached file for how I do mine - these are sooooo handy in any SEO campaign).

My 2c.

I'd want to be able to create an account so it would remember the URL and keywords that I wanted to track. I hate having to re-enter that crap.

I would say something similar to DP would be nice, but with the following features.
- Include PR of that specific page
- Include Quantity of backlinks for specific page
- If at all possible a multiple choice for country selection so both country specific and google international can be monitored at the same time. At the current moment I am running 3 accounts at DP for this reason.

Just wanted to add, the reason DP is so successfull is the fact that it stores your progress. What would be interesting is to add the PR and Backlink update dates to such a graph, adding these and perhaps an algo update might be tricky though But still very interesting to see how stable your rankings stay...

I agree, the historical tracking is one of the best features of the DP keyword tracker. It would be great if this new one form V7N had all 3 SE rankings on one line so you don't have to have 3 lines for one keyword. Also, if you could click on the ranking # from a particular SE and it would launch a new window with the search so you could see the results manually.

John that is a very interesting view point on the blog post and certainly valid. Just want to add other factors which also make keyword monitoring a bit more complex. For example on-page usability has a great influence on the user's behaviour, conversion ratios and retention. This can cause some assumptions on keyword performance to be bad or inaccurate.

Targeting specific keywords are becoming a science of it's own requiring allot of data and data analysis.

Taking it a step further will probably require checking the results in the following manner.

keyword > #competing pages > ranking > clickthru ratio > conversion ratio > duration of visit > recency > retention value...

Are you looking at a tool that is that serious?
WOW, ok now that will certainly make a senior impact on the industry...

Thumbs down

I just do it manually even though it's exhausting and time consuming. At least I'm sure that is accurate keywords rank from different search engines.
