Most overlooked linking tips
1. PageRank zero pages can pass link juice and impact rankings.
2. High PageRank pages do not necessarily pass link juice. Many link to bad neighborhoods and have lost link juice passing ability.
3. ALT text of images linked to other can be very powerful.
4. Link placement matters - footer links often do not help.
5. Link stability matters. Links in rotation do not have the same properties as static links.
6. For Google, exact match anchor texts help. That is to say, if you want to rank for "web hosting" then get links with "web hosting" in the anchor text and not variations thereof.
7. Non keyword anchor text links help.

I must agree, as a SEO specialist a lot of things are over looked in the SEO linking dept. Your very first tip I am very in agreement with. I have several PR0 sites which create me 20 - 30 nice back links and jump that site with 20-30 back links from PR0 to Pr4 in just a couple of months when the next update is. It truly is a joy!
PS, I never thought about it, but could I add these tips of yours to my free SEO site for all? at www.sseppd.org I will put your name and link on the tip!

That is cool. I always thought that page rank 0's could count. I stopped looking at page rank and just look at whether it is a quality site or a spammy looking site. I am still not very good at SEO, but I try.

Thanks, I am making myself join in on the forums. I sometimes find them intimidating as being a mom is more my thing, but I still having so much to learn. I think I got the basics down, but still working on lots of fine tuning. There's so much info to take in and then half the sites I read contradict each other.

It probably goes without saying, but I think they do if you have enough volume. I've seen web design companies that rank well with 99% of their backlinks being the "designed by" links in the footer.
The smart ones use links like "<a>web design</a> by company name" and the not so smart ones do "designed by <a>company name</a>".

Thanks for the list. One question regarding #3: do you mean that alt text acts as the anchor in a text link? cool

Great tips John .. I have a question. What do you think of sponsored/buying footer links that are placed in Wordpress themes? Do they have any SEO/PR value? I'm asking because I've seen several websites that rank very well and have really high PRs simply through buying links in Wordpress themes.
More specifically on sponsored Wordpress links...should the anchor text for the footer links include keywords or should they be non keyword?
I'm thinking that they should be non-keyword because they are sitewide and can often include many, many pages.
What do you think?

The ones that are site-wide footer links?
Some value, but not the best.

I would tend to agree but it depends on the link profile of the linked-to site. If it has a very strong and organic link profile it can probably afford to have some keyword links.
