PR5 my achievable goal
The #1 key word I’m going after is motocross boots. When I google “motocross boots” none of the first page sites have a PR of over 5. So that is my goal, to get a PR of 5 for my site mxmegastore dot com. How many PR 5 links can I expect to have to buy in order to get a PR of 5? 10, 50, 100? My site is 9 months old and currently has a PR of 2.

mxracer,
I am in the same boat as you. I have a pr of 2 and my site is six months old. My competition has pr of 4. I set a daily monthly and yearly goal. Ex. 10 in links a day.

I know I need more links but how many can I expect to have to buy/get in order to achieve a PR 5? 10, 20, 50, 250?

Maybe you are looking for this resource. Otherwise strong link popularity can substitute the higher PR value, and it is supposed to be much cheaper in many cases.

If you are going to play the pr game than you can get a pr5 with one strong pr6 link.
But, you are better off getting more links that are on topic related pages. Don't worry so much about pr and look for pages to link to you that are indexed and that have decent and relavent inlinks.
For your keyword, if you have a decent product, you should be able to get motorcycle riders to blog about your product which will help you in the serps, give you advertising, and help your branding.

PR5 link WILL NOT guarantee you top positions no matter if any of the top10 sites doesn't have PR higher than 4. Just search google and compare PR of top10, top100, top1000 sites. Got it?

You are setting the wrong goals for the site. You should be more worried about search engine rankings and traffic.

So is the group consensus that I should try to find a couple links on high pr sites that are related to motocross? Sounds easier said than done. Will having PR 2 sites link to me hurt me if I’m going for PR 5? I know I can get low traffic pages to link to me but will this hurt me? I’ve started a promotion entitled “Link your site to ours and we’ll mail you a free key chain”, This promotion has gotten a few responses so far. Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for the link to webconfs.com/backlink-builder Bagi. I've been submitting to every random directory I can find but this site allows me to submit to tons of motorcycle related directories. Are there any other sites like this that allow me to search for specific directories to submit to?

Yes, definitely. Links are better than no links, but relevant links are best of all.

Pagerank is passed by the total PR of that page divided by the number of total links. a PR 7 page with a 100 links is worth 0.07 PR
a page 4 with 20 links is worth 0.2
make sure their is nofollow code
think about how many links are on the page.

" PR is only about the quality backlinks of your site. It have nothing to do with SERPs".....Build many quality links to achieve PR and submit it to directories with higher PR put it on right category and optimize your contents make it SE friendly and also make it informative and rich in contents for users....

Well - if you just want PR5 -and nothing else --buy one strong PR7 link pointing to your domain/site --enough for PR5
But I don't think it will give you 100% gurantee for top ranking. You need some good quality contents on your site too. Not to forget the link popularity aspect -- find large indexed sites related to your site and don't consider the PR of them. Just get listed site-wide on the home-page. If you can find five sites like that --they will increase your link popularity by few thousands.
Then you enjoy --your ranking.
