What difference "ban" vs "de-index" ?

What are the differences between "ban" and "de-index" ?
Are they all same?
How to tell when you got banned or de-indexed?

Thanks in advance.

This is only my opinion but...

A ban is when they will no longer pay attention to you at all.
De-indexed is when a domain is expired and they no longer crawl the site. Registering the domain again and link building will cause the site to be re-indexed.

They're effectively the same thing. i.e. the site can't be found in the index.

Google are highly unlikely to ban a site. Is your site not showing up under a site: command?
