Very interesting.

It was common knowledge that irrelevant amd unrelated content is useless wrt search engine rankings but it looks like from your experiment that search engines identify the worth of a page based on how many users actually find it useful. How they identify that is still a mystery to me!

I have known for very long time that the less pages you have the more ranking weight your pages will get....otherwise everyone will be piggy backing from a well ranked site (and why sell links when you can sell high ranking domain space?). However you can still control the flow by placing de-indexed pages much lower down in the linking levels so there is no need to hide from SE. Deleting pages is risky if it means removing deep links.

Interesting, John. I can see why Google would operate this way.

About a month or so ago, I committed myself, removed pages from v7n that were xxx number of days old, had less than xxx number of page views, and less than xxx number of responses. Just to be sure that I didn’t remove any worthwhile discussions, I went through the list and checked anything that might be remotely worthwhile.
Did you remove anything with an inbound (i.e. external) link?

Not that I know of, and most were threads from the New Member Introductions forum, the Website Review forum, and the like. Not the kind of threads that get linked to.

I don't know, it seems a little too early to compare, based on what your blog post has said. Afterall, Google dances around a lot lately. Will you be reimplementing those pages as others have suggested in the comments in your blog, to see if it has negative effects?

Great experiment. I definitely agree. Keep us posted on the stats for your next experiment.
