Yes, testing will reveal much. I'm a great believer in a/b testing, and watching the results.

Adwords testing reveals that having the keyword in the title leads to higher click throughs, however that doesn't work if all ads display the keyword in the title. This is because all ads now look the same.
Same thing happens with serps.
The click will go to the title that stands out. It will stand out because it provides value the others do not. If your domain/company name has buyer recognition, then that is value. Use it.
In a crowded SERP, throw away the SEO manual, and use any other term (in addition to the search term) in your title. Use any term that will help differentiate you from the rest.
A ranking is of no value if no one clicks on it.
