You don't HAVE to submit any pages of any sites to search engines. I haven't submitted a site to a search engine for YEARS. Just get good links and sites will be indexed.

Yeah you really don't have to submit. The engines will just naturally pick you up.

hello,
yes u dont have to submit to search engines.
But still there are companies who take money for search engine submission and the fact is customers agree to pay for that.
So from overall study i mentioned that.
And its one of the step in Search Engine Optimization which must be there atleast for the knowledge for the newbies.

SEO Steps:
Ongoing steps -
Site Submissions - submit your site to search engines, search engine directories, blog directories, aggregators, etc.
Submissions by only submitting a maximum of five pages per day per site and no more than a few times per week.
This allows to remain within the acceptable submission guidelines for most of the major search engines.
Internal and external link development Reciprocal linking, link requests
Link Development Campaign
Monitor & Maintain Your Campaign
Listing in DMOZ and Yahoo! directory listings
Reciprocal linking
Creating RSS feeds
Adding URLs in articles, news postings
Extra writing additions -
Adding news section in website, adding frequently changing contents
Blogs-
1. Get a free blog.
2. Link your website to your blog.
In your blog template, add a link to your website. Also, set up your blog so there is a link field in every post. Set this field to link to your website. Thus, every post will contain a link at the bottom of the post to your main website.
3. Write 3 articles each week.
Even better would be one article each day (5/week),
Just write an opening sentence, expound on that sentence in three short paragraphs, and conclude your post with a restatement of your opening sentence, reworded just slightly. Then, post your article to your blog.
4. Submit your article to website eg. EzineArticles.com.
Doing this will enable your article to be indexed by Google. This is very good for you, because once your article is indexed at Google; a backlink to your website will be generated for you. This will result in better search engine positioning and more traffic for you.
5. Submit your article to GoArticles.com. and other websites
6. Keep this process going.
I know you all know this already, Still this is a small contribution from me.
If i missed out something, please go ahead and add.

Would tend to agree with most of your points.
However I feel that in the same way that site submission is something that is no longer necessary, I also feel that sitemaps, custom 404s and robots.txt FOR MOST SITES are not mandatory for good SEO.
I would argue that for most websites out there the default spider behaviours work well. Use sitemaps if any of your pages are not reachable from any other page (why would you want to do that?) and use robots.txt to exclude certain areas for indexing by all means, but I don't believe in just using them blindly

hello Owen,
I am also agree with you but not on all the points.
Users normally go to sitemap if they are lost or they are looking for some particular information on your site which they dont find easily. So i think sitemap use is necessary.
You can use Robot.txt only if you want restriction in some areas of your site.
Else if there are no restrictions then no need to use robot.txt file.
And about custom 404 page :
Whenever your site is unable to find any request, it displays a normal system 404 page. So instead of displaying that 404 page, we can create our own custom 404 page and optimize it for better.
Thanks

I'm a new web master, just started my first website, [link removed]. I'm not a web developer or a programmer, so all of this is new to me.
The website just went live last week and now I'm trying to get it picked up by the search engines. My web developer is trying to charge me big bucks for an SEO campaign, but I would prefer to avoid further expenditure. Here is where I stand:
1. I have a valid URL
2. I have meta tag with about 60 keywords and phrases
3. I have manually submitted my URL to both Yahoo and Google for indexing.
I did Step 3 about a week ago, and it still hasn't shown up in either search engine yet. I have read about how I need to be linked by a site already in the index in order to speed up the process, but I don't know the best way to go about that, beyond the BLOG suggestion in this thread.
Can anyone help me with this? What are other ways of getting linked to other sites that could help me out?
Thanks!

Good list but these are the questions:
- what do you mean by Very clean and clear HTML?
- Examples of unnecessary use of tags.
