SEO and site re-design

if i were to have a client that was ranked #1 for a paticular search term and i were to completly redesign there website, but still use good on page SEO, whould the site remain #1 because of all the backlinks or would it drop down because it is organized differantly?

same question but lets say the client was #10 and i improved the on page SEO, would it drop, stay the same, or raise and if so how fast?

i know this thred has a lot of question but if you can answer any one them that would help.

thanks in advance

Your ranking will drop for some time or say until next crawl, and it will come back in some days time if you have not overdone any thing.

I'm not sure it will drop... Is the site going offline? Do you change the content (text) and the meta titles and descriptions? If the site is not going offline and the content is kept (eventually improved) I see no reason for a drop. Sure, I could be wrong, I am not an SEO expert. But I remember reading somewhere that redesign, if done wisely, should boost the site...

Considering the website is ranking #1, if you are changing mostly the design of the website you don't need to worry much, avoid changing the linking structure of the site.

Of course it will be affected. However onsite optimization just caters 30% and offsite optimization affects 70%.

only the links on the main page are text links, once you click on a "main link" it go's to other pages, where all of the links including the "main links" are pictures.

if i were to change the picture links into text links, and keep the same alt tags, it should be fine right?
