In my short time trying and many hours reading I have found that it is a constant struggle that requires lots of hours or work and many hours reading to stay current on techniques. A bit of a PITA but well worth it if you figure it out.

The best thing I know about SEO is that I know little to nothing about SEO. All the knowledge I've gained about SEO has been via research and generous amounts of trial and error.

I think the best knowledge someone can gain from SEO is to not take any one particular source as the bible of SEO, shop around, do your research, test, and form your own opinions.

In my own opinion, keyword might be the top thing for SEO. All other seo or smo jobs base on keywords. For backlinks, it would be best if you could get links from authority sites (might be not high PR sites) in your niche.
