Not if you can secretly sell links from a PR 9 page, it's not.
I don't think there's a 'single most important thing' in SEO - or if there is, what can you say? Get links? Page titles? That's it. The two most important things.
Links
Titles
And don't even start unless you're patient.

New SEO
I am also new in SEO.. for me the most important thing to know as a new SEO is to know the true meaning and what is SEO all about..its purpose and importance..
why did i say so?
because..before you ever know every terms and definition that you will encounter on being an SEO.. try to look or search first the different meanings of SEO (Search Engine Optimization)..

really easy success with simple seo
Hi all, Search engine optimization is many tiny parts combined to give the best result and John Scott summed it up for what it is or lack off sometimes, so well. Awesome stuff man
I honestly think the most important thing is Lexical density, frequency and prominence, its exactly how a search bot pulls your words out and turns them into "lexicals" they are then reformed into words as we know them. Its how a search engine works in data gathering. And is worth reading about if you want to get serious about seo.
can i throw in an easy one? thats both measurable and easily provable.
Use your DOMAIN NAME in your <TITLE>
Search anything, okay i just did, "search anything" on Google
6 out of the top 10 have there domain in title.Try it with any word or words you like the same rule will apply, normally its about 80%,
nothing at all to do with keywords links or even onsite optimization really . just doubling up the power of your domain. the "Keyword" you want to be found for just need to be up there too and in content, and you only have 68 characters to fit it all in plus getting your lexical density, frequency, prominence and about 100 other small things. ranking top 10 is easier.

What Is The Single Best Thing You Know About SEO?
Accepting Change. Search engine optimization is all about making websites search engine friendly. So, every time the search engines change site indexing and listing criteria, the approach to search engine optimization must respond. The "right criteria" are elusive, but Google and the other major players are at least willing to provide tools and suggestions on their sites.

If you pass up on sites with low pr, you will have wasted the time you spent finding that site.
All inbound links are good, some are better, and others are better still.
I just posted a thread to the SEO forum that covers the best thing I know, see: A Synthesized Strategy

Since no one has mentioned it yet, I would say Silo structure combined with deep linking with contextual anchor text (keyword) links.

I don't know, maybe this is old school, and I have not heard nor read much about this, but one thing I have recently started to do and I highly encourage everyone to at least try is supporting your backlinks. By that I mean adding links from your support sites and blogs to your backlinks' sites (not reciprocal links from your main site(s), but kind of like triangular linking setups: first is the directory link to you main site, then you add a link to your detailed info in that directory from one blog, then add another link from another blog to that directory's category, that, of course, also includes your main site and if you keep building these "triads" in similar ways with good links from good blogs and good directories, it will create a very powerful synergy within itself in a very short time. And also submitting both categorical and detailed backlinks of your main site(s) to good, well-ranked, free directories is something that I think is very beneficial for both your site and your backlinks' sites in many very good ways, indeed.
And by adding support links to your backlinks of detailed listings and categories etc., this will show those directories' and other supporting sites that you are a very good and upstanding webmaster and a very good link partner for sure. And when they know that you are, in fact, supporting them, then they will further support your site and feature your listing and drive more traffic to your site through other sites that they have supporting them and I really believe that this is very good way to build a quite strong and powerful network of linked sites that will all work together and if it is done right and honestly, then every site within the interlinked networks that you build will definitely benefit.
Check it out ! IT REALLY WORKS!!!
