Ranking an online casino
I’m thinking about throwing my hat into the ring of the online casino game. This is probably one of the hardest industries to rank highly for (I’m thinking second, porn being #1). Is this a field that’s too hard to rank for? Is this a pipe dream I should give up on?

Not impossible, but difficult - established sites have a long lead, and deep pockets. You'd have to figure out a way to compete with those advantages.
Also keep in mind that one of the big problems in this area is now regulatory.

Depending on where you live, and who your market is, it may be illegal to advertise gambling sites.

It is possible. It will take about 6 month - 1 year of link building if you want to promote for free, if you gonna invest large ammount of money, it will give you result in 2-6 month (Not official, it is just my opinion).
Remember, there are millions sites in this industry, but 99% of them spammers and they drop and banned in search engines pretty often. Just build quality link, submit in directories, write articles, exchange links, try paid directories and PayPerPost.
Bet on niche words, don't try to bet on "Online casino, casino, jackpot". Pick more related keywords.
More content!
I have SEO site and it rank well on Google and MSN (Yahoo doesn't like me). It took me about 8-9 month to get pretty nice positions with thousands monthly clicks from Google.
Also, here my chart of most competitive sites:
1. Sex
2. Gambling
3. SEO (webmaster)
4. Directories
5. Hotels (travel) - Global
6. Real estate - Global
7. Cars - Global, all brands.
8. Dating/Relationships - global

I’m from Wisconsin and I know that online casino’s are now illegal in the US. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. When the online casino ban went into affect 6 months ago I thought that all was lost. There are a lot of people out there challenging the legality of that law. I’m betting on the off chance that in a few years the bill gets overturned and online casinos become legal again. It happened to prohibition, I don’t see why it couldn’t happen in the future for gambling. I was thinking about building a FREE online casino and if the ban got lifted in a few years I may be better able to capitalize on it. People could play blackjack, hold-em, slots, ect for fun. In the process I’d be building authority and links.

Interesting angle.
There's also the education approach i.e. teaching people systems, how to play, etc.
Then, if online gambling becomes legal in the US again, you could easily switch the emphasis.

Wow! Great point... Maybe not entire US, but at least some states can make it legal.
It is a good future investment.
Grow weed! What if it will be legal soon!

It won't be a smart move to get hands into it before it gets legal in whichever state the person is. It may be a good future investment but what if in does not get legal. One can apply its time and ideas into something more constructive and rewarding which is not illegal.

Well I’ve decided to go for it. I just purchased my-home-casino com and am going to start promoting it in my spare time as an educational site where people can learn casino games then play them for free. Any advice on where to get a template for this? By searching for “casino website template” I get a lot of nice looking site templates that come up but I’m not sure if any of these have the actual game software or just the homepage html. Most of them are flash sites and since I know absolutely no html and have no desire to learn any I think I may be better off staying away from flash. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I did not understand, do you want to create an online casino, or templates about casinos online?
