Wikipedia: Useful Source Of Traffic
This PEW Internet report found that 36% of online US-based adults use Wikipedia. On a typical day, 8% use Wikipedia. It's not surprising, as Wikipedia tops so many Google searches.
http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/212/report_display.asp
So, if you have a resource site that is on-topic, Wikipedia can be a great source of free traffic. The downside is that anyone can edit you out - however if your site is valuable enough, that's less likely to happen.
And who says Google don't no-follow....

I agree Peter. Wikipedia can be a great source of traffic... (And... every visitor is a potential linker.)
You hit it on the head when you said "if your site is valuable enough". Obviously, trying to spam Wikipedia isn't a good idea. Adding links to content that is relevant and offers a lot of value to readers of a particular article, will have more chance at surviving edits.
When considering adding a link from an article to a page on either your site or a client's site, if you feel it may be misconstrued as self-promotional, place the potential link on the talk page instead and offer it up to the other editors to see what they think. Then you have a solid chance that they will see you are on the up-and-up, and they may add your link. Communication is key, as is building trust. I've had good success with getting several relevant, valuable links into Wikipedia for various clients. Even adding new articles isn't too hard if you do it right.

Indeed and Wiki is my 8th top traffic source with 120 visits a week from about 20 links!
However I do not agree with "no follow" passing rank. Google will not undermine the "no-follow" attribute. If they did the attribute would be meaningless

I used to have a website that is listed in Wikipedia and it got several hundred unique visitors every day from Wikipedia.
Just waiting for Google to launch Googlpedia now.

From one link? That is impressive but from the sounds of it rather competitive thus was it removed?

It wasn't spam, it was quality info, and to the best of my knowledge it's still there.

Yeah good same with my links. I am lucky Wikipedia seems to deliver traffic without getting into direct competition with my key words. If it did however I would be slightly annoyed.

You can't create a Wikipedia article until unless there is some press around that particular topic/entity. It will get deleted. If you're not familiar with Wikipedia, then start small...don't try to write a new article right away. Start with making intelligent and useful additions to an existing article. Read the "How to" pages on Wikipedia. Get to know some of the other editors. If there is an existing article you want to be linked from, then create a relevant resource that would greatly benefit readers of that article.

Guess I'm lucky- I do some sites for a few local governments, and the localities automatically get a wiki on them.
The other goody about wikipedia is their relativity(sp?). Not a bad idea to have some outbound links to wiki articles defining the subject material.

Wikipedia is a great way to have your link listed on a quality site, but you need to know how to write the article to have it posted there for a long time. I think they appreciate if you add your article having an account instead adding one as anonymous.

Googlepedia? Is this a joke? Are they really going to do it? Do you have more info about this? This might be really interesting you know, especially for creators of valuable content like yourself.

Well, I don't know that they will do it, but it does seem that Google likes to take high traffic website models and mimic them.

Wikipedia will be useful resource offline as well
Wikipedia is one step ahead now "the wikipedians have reviewed and selected nearly 2K core Wikipedia articles and that will be sold on compact disc to give people without a net connection to access the useful web resource. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:1.0

Nice!
[Still hard to fathom though that in this day and age there are people out there with a computer but no net connection.]
