I haven't read that one, big drunk.
But, I'm going to recommend another one that's pretty good. It isn't about SEO, but rather is about search engines, and it's pretty readable. It's more of a nonfiction, history of search and search engines than a how-to guide.
Web Dragons: Inside the Myths of Search Engine Technology
There are glowing reviews on the back of the book from Google's Craig Neville-Manning, Yahoo!'s Prabhakar Raghaven, and Microsoft's Johnathan Grudin.
It's written for a wider audience than just SEOs, but it goes into some very nice detail about things that have happened on the Web.

Thanks Bill. I have ordered this. Big fan of your patent analysis so I'll give this a read.

You're welcome, Redfly.
Thank you for your kind words. I think that you'll like the book.
It's the kind of book that you wished search engineers would write - thankfully, without a lot of the detailed math that you see in patents and whitepapers from the search engines.

I actually enjoy some of the math to an extent. It's amazing the number crunching that goes on behind the scenes.
I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Bill, nice to see a wider reading list than the standard fare. But I doubt our friend cares. Note the ref=pd_bowtega in the link? This is a lame attempt at getting affiliate commissions. IMHO.

Oh, and btw, I'm another fan of SEO by the Sea. Got one of your tips in a Web Marketing Today newsletter from Dr. Ralph something or other? About googling for "add url"+my keyword ; submit url keyword etc? And I linked to your coverage when I reported on Google's architectural drawing thingamobabbober. (You followed up on that to see how it's competing vs other established software in the industry?) ANyways, yeah, here's another fan. (If we could trade blogroll links it'd be cool too.)

Hi bookworm-seo,
Good to see you. I remember your post. I hadn't noticed the affiliate referral, and I hadn't read the book, but I've heard some positive things about it. I've added a link from my blogroll to you.
I've been meaning to do some stuff with Sketchup. Had a personal project that I wanted to use it on, and I may be getting into it more over the next couple of weeks.
Redfly,
If you like some of the math, here's another one that you might enjoy:
Google's PageRank and Beyond: The Science of Search Engine Rankings
I just sent for a copy myself last week, but I've seen some positive reviews of it, and the authors are responsible for this paper from a couple of years ago:
Deeper Inside PageRank (pdf)

Why would you do that? You know it's illegal, but think it's cool to just give away Aaron Wall's hard work for free?

No, that's why the author should be compensated for writing it.

So if other people are stealing the author's work, it's ok?
