SEO do's and don'ts when buying a site w/PR

I bought a site recently that had a PR3 and it went to PR0 less then 2 weeks later. I added a logo, changed the categories around a bit and did some general tinkering....

NOW I'm buying a PR5 site and can't afford to lose any pagerank so I'm looking for some do's and don'ts so I don't screw anything up.

Anyone? Thanks in advance!

Check the main theme the site used, maybe it has a high PR for that.

Start promoting it ASAP because if you rely on previous links you will only be let down very quickly. As bin_asc said, if the new theme is different than the old one then the backlinks will drop fast.

Site is a directory and will remain a directory. I was thinking more along the lines of a new logo, template, some changes to sponsor links and site description.

Just don't take the site offline while you edit it. If Google crawls it and finds an error page it will asume that the site is dead and it will take it out of its listings. Some people believe that if you make changes gradually the PR will not have to suffer. But are you sure the PR you see is real? There are ways to fake that, you know...

Pretty sure they're real, but in this day and age of implants even the fake ones can seem pretty real!

I definitely prefer real so how does one insure that the PR is real?

I seriously dont think any of that will affect PR...
I would go ahead and change it without worry.

You must update your PR everytime you do the changes.. maybe it's in the description or the keywords that used to be in the site might be deleted.. continue to promote your site or exchange links because if you do some changes, it's true old links in your site drop fast..
