how long am i looking at before i see ...
Hi guys,
just a quick one from me, i have recently had some SEO work done on [link removed], i've also submitted to hundreds of directories, posted on digg, shoutwire etc, submitted articles to top rated article sites and exchanged links with related websites with decent pr and not many links on the page where my link is placed
i was just wondering what sort of time scale i'm looking at before it all kicks in, how long before i should start to see an increase in traffic from search engines and other places on the web...
any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance

Some traffic may arise from the above activities, but it certainly isn't a given. Is your site in the casino arena?
It really depends how entrenched your competition is and how you're targeting your market.

There's no easy answer, I'm afraid. Other than "it depends"
If it's a new site, you may see a sandbox-like effect. i.e. the site gets included in the index, but ranks nowhere.
Here's a pretty good post on the topic:

Yeah, there's really no 1,2,3, ok....TRAFFIC!
If it were that easy we would all have many multi million dollar sites.
It takes the same sort of dedication, hard work, and "Tweaking" as a B&M.
There is no systematic answer on the web, no more than any other business.
Sometimes you get lucky, but it's not really luck, it's the rewards of hard work, knowledge and experience.

It is depends on how you optimize your site and you promote your site. Gaining inbound backlinks to a new site early on and maintaining is more valuable than having a gap of time where you receive few to no backlinks. It's also important that the speed of your link growth is natural.

It depends on how you optimized your site for search engine to rank. And other backlinks can also boost your traffic.

I would say anywhere from 2-6 months. Maybe longer for some directories/search engines

Three months at a bare minimum if you get lots of quality links, but more than likely 9 months.

ajkendall,
My site is 6.5 months old in a commercial related category. I have links from the following directories and am still in the sandbox:
Yahoo (sponsored)
V7N
Alive
Aviva
Ewebpages
joeant
gii.in
romow
and many other trusted google sites.
I believe you should keep building links and when you do emerge from the sandbox you will be that much happier.
Another thought to the sandbox theory, that I have not heard is the age of trusted links. I believe that getting links is only part of the equation. Google needs to see your site with these links for a few months before they will release you from the sandbox. This is only my theory, but it seems logical.

A key besides getting those visitors is to retain them. You can only retain them if you have some substantial content in comparison to obviously no other then your competitors.

Yep, 9 months is the time frame that is mostly thrown out there. Purgotory for nine months.

Haha, yes 9 months seem pretty reasonable...it's a test to see if you can really stick in there. Nothing comes over night!

Actually that has absolutely nothing to do with it. No matter how much you "optimize" you will be in the sandbox for around 9 months. If you don't go out and get good links and get indexed early it could even be closer to one year.

If your site is new... It will takes for the SE to crawls it... Usually the SE crawls frequently if you have new in your site... Just build more links...

Well, to make sure things go faster you can go on a ping frenzy to push the crawl a lil.

It doesn't matter how often it gets crawled. You are in the sand box starting from your first index until around 9 months later.
