How much weight do internal links carry?

I noticed that yahoo and google seperate links by internal and external. I read often that relevant, quality backlinks are important for SEO, but I rarely encounter information that tells about internal site links, and their importance. Is more better?

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.

I think the first few internal links carry good weight, but after the first dozen or so they don't much matter. Just my feeling.

internal links are good in long terms.. which helps google to index a page and put in serp.

when we doing backlink search... link:www.yourdomain.com
your internal site will be included as well. the role is there.

..and aside from being convenient (finding contents) to your readers, internal links can also help you avoid the Google Hell.

Are you saying:

A) Sitewide links that apear first in the HTML carry more weight?

B) Top level navigation links carry more weight?

C) Both of the above?

...My own opinion is mostly C but possible a little A as well but much harder to prove.

I'm saying that if you have a website with thousands of pages, like v7n, putting that link on 10,000 pages will not benefit you any more than putting it on 1,000 pages.

That makes sense, I found that with my site two or three internal links will work just as well as a site-wide with nearly forty.

Ok, i used to have a page with information about laptops you can buy from SONY VAIO and affiliate link to SONY store. Link to this page was linked from every page on my site (about 150 pages).
Google used send me about 20-30 people a day directly to this page and my sales was about $500/month in CJ comissions.
Later i removed all this links and left only 1 link on my homepage... Google positions for this page dropped in 2 weeks and sales went to 0. When i added this page on all pages again... Google increased rankings for this page.

Also. If you type domain name of autority website on Google, you can see homepage and 5 most important pages from this site. Often it is page "About", "Contact", "Subdomain", "Directory" and other most important pages. I think that Google count "About" or "Contact us" pages more than any other content pages.
