Directory don't guaranteed higher traffic but it help you improved your SERP. Try link exchange with related sites to have a better ranking in search engine. Higher ranking can give you higher traffic.

You need to build quality links!
Write articles, try to exchange links with only good sites, submit in niche directories related to your topic... you can even invest and buy some links.
Try IwebTool advertising programm. They offer pr5 links for $5 a month and it also gives 10-50 clicks a month...

What's the URL?
I only have a few hundred directory submissions, and it's off to a good start traffic wise.
That is probably not the issue, it is probably with the blog itself and how competitive the market is.
How old is the blog?
Max out all of your free resources and options first before you start to buy anything. JMO.
I think paid links should be supplemental after you have done all that you can successfully for free.
It's like starting a new relationship with gifts and expensive dinners..if you can't hold your own without it, you are in for a rude awakening if funds get low.

Links from directories should be only a small part of your SEO campaign. They usually provide very low or no traffic at all but they are a good start for new sites in obtaining links.

Directories and Link Exchange would not guaranteed traffic. You must evaluated the link of a directories or link exchange, if it has page rank or with traffic. Social Bookmarking will help boost traffic for your site, you must submit the link of your blog that is related to your site.

Directory submission gives improves PR side by side improve search Engine Ranking, S E Optimizers submit in free directories and often says submit your site in root category. Although they submit in root category but maximum times there submission is rejected. Professional submit in deep category but pages take long time to be crawled by search Engine so there site take more time to get a backlink.
But what my thinking is
"if you getting link free, just put your link, Wheather the particular page is crawled or not."

I agree with you.
I actually have that same curiosity. I don't believe submission to directories can improve your traffic. Correct me if I am wrong. So, what exactly effective way to improve website traffic as well as boost your website rank/popularity?
Thanks for post this question, nuttaphong191.

don't lose hope... just continue exchanging links but with high quality sites, try to search for some other way of link building. social bookmarking, ads, blog submission, article submission and forums can still help your site in gaining traffic.

Yes you have to "keep on keeping on". Social Networking sites are pretty good, to help you get past the 100 a day point.
The quality of your content will be the overall determining factor.
Will first time visitors come back, or subscribe?
I have a new project also and it's not easy, but you have to keep applying the principles and you will see a difference.
Keep your eyes open, and look at other peoples blogs and sites see what is working for them.

My findings say that you should try with free press release submission. base.google.com, prleap.com etc.

Ignore old directories with pr less than 4. Submit only in niche directories, directories with pr4+ and new directories to get best keywords as anchor text before it taken already.

yes 1000 directories are not helpfull for the traffic.
I have done more of 1300 submission in directories with reciprocal link but the traffic is close to 0.
In average 1300 directories give one good pagerank to arrive to pr3 or to pr 4 but not more.

Like others have said, the directories probably won't help traffic.
I've had the best luck with traffic by updating sites, often, and with good content. To start you may want to buy an ad on a high-traffic and related site, show these visitors you have good content that gets updated and they'll hopefully return.

Find the fish where the fish are
Most of the free directories itself struggle for traffic.
