I suspect Mike is putting the cat amongst the pigeons again. He's saying that the technical tweaks are meaning less and less (true) whilst the marketing aspects are carrying more and more weight (true)

Whatever happens, those who predict where the search engines are heading next, stand to profit the most.

It is true that every website has to stand out by offering an excellent user experience and only those that do can stick around. However, if you have the best store on the planet that offers the best buyer experience, customer service and price, you won't sell anything unless buyers can find you. As long as there is competition on the web, there will be a need for SEO.

SEO will only become more sophisticated to keep spammy sites away.

What does buyers finding you have to do with SEO? There are a LOT of ways to get traffic that have nothing to do with search engines or optimizing them.

There may be a market for it, but there is not a NEED for it.

There is not a single person, company or webiste on the planet that NEEDS seo, (whatever that is). What every person, company or website on the planet does need is to hit their objective. To make sales or create leads and/or get prospects to take a desired action.

It is true that someone has to be aware of your offer before they can respond. You gotta have butts in the pews if you want to pass the plate. But again, that doesn't HAVE to mean seo, (whatever that is).
