Backlink Matter
On "Hep Forte" keyword nextag.com has 386,000 backlinks with better PR and also contain .gov and .edu on the other hand HerbsMD.com has 6,016 backlinks most of them consist of it own sub-domains but still HerbsMD has better position than nextag.com. Why?

Maybe nextag.com is not that optimize for the said keyword and even if it does have more IBLs it doesn't mean that it'll have better position than other sites...IBL is not only the factor that helps for your ranking position...

Selfie is right, Quality content and link building strategies is another factor that help for your ranking position.

SERP positioning is not about backlinks... There are lots of factor regarding SERP. PR is about quality backlinks... Even if you have lots of backlinks you are not sure if you will ranking in SEs...

It happens, because some of the sites with most inbound links would be under or have a lower rank than sites where links to your site are built. Meaning, it can also depend on the keyword management.

Even HerbsMD.com has less backlinks, those backlinks could be from quality sites and maybe it's content was properly optimized with targeted keywords.

Some times, more backlinks may harm your SERP position. Meaning, keywords in your anchor texts in other sites would be indexed earlier, giving them the higher SERP rank than you do.

It's all about quality backlinks
From what I understand, many many times on search results, you will find that sites with fewer than 25 back links performing better than sites with 5000 backlinks...the reason is simple ...those 25 backlinks could be from expert and authority sites while the thousands of backlinks could be from random sites

With time, I'd bet that getting a few authority links is way better than tens of thousands of links from random sites

Be careful in building link....Don't build links too fast.. Build it slowly .. Google detects those who build links in fast acquisition and may lead to penalization...

Agreed! Quality links on related sites and/or "in the ballpark" sites are the most sensible ones to go after, and watching that one places his/her links on sites that get traffic (so your link benefits potentially from their visitors) is also a good idea.

It does matter and like other members in here have mentioned, it's not the sole factor to have a higher PR or rank high when you do SERP.
