Go for subdomains, it is easier to submit it in directories than the second one.

For me, second option is better : http://www.mydomain.com/forums

You gain rankings immediately, and with subdomain you must build links and wait some time if you wanna rank.

Exactly, you have control of how much page rank you assign to these pages. You can not do that with a sub domain.

You are right. I am with you.

and second thing is most of the popular forums (including V7N) are using second option.
So obviously, this should be more convenient.

Send a message via Yahoo to mitra
ultimately your aim should be to build a highly participating community just like this forum. For SEs, I'd definitely go with the 2nd option.

I agree with the majority on this one. If you place your forum on a subfolder ( ie. yourdomain.com/forum/) then you'll have more control of the internal linking (PR juice) for your main site.

Personally if it was me I would put use a regular site, and not a sub domain because if you use a regular site you will get more links to it Sub domain is counted as a whole new domain

I'm a big believer in paying close attention to the experts and what they do. Look at the the address in your browser and you'll see how the experts behind v7n would answer your question.

Best of success with your new forums.

I use a mix of subdomains and subfolders. I can easily say a subfolder is much better for grabbing the pr juice from the main site. The subdomains, although I like them, are a pain to rank with. It seems I have now have 3 sites to link build than just 1.
