ror.xml and google sitemaps
What is the difference between the ror.xml and google sitemaps files? Should you use both?

ROR is a rapidly growing XML formatted feed for describing your website to the search engines - contents, products, services, reviews, discounts, images, events, schedule, podcasts, blog, anything you want. in short it's just link a feed...

I use both. I use the ror.xml for all other search engines. Go to www.rorweb.com and choose sitemap, type in your url and wait for the program to generate it. Copy then paste it to notepad and save it as ror.xml. Upload it to your root directory. Another good site is www.xml-sitemaps.com. Both are free.

As I found out you can only generate online ROR sitemap xml if the number of URLs does not exceed 1000. There is a desctop version, which can generate for 5000 URLs. but what can I do, if the number of URLs I have is more than 300 000?
How can it me fast growing [this has been said for two years already], if it does not allow us to generate sitemaps for the big sites?

I thought that search engines were starting to use your robs.txt file instead of xml sitemaps

You mean the robot txt. It is different from xml sitemaps...
xml sitemaps are maps of links of a website while for the robot.txt click this link

So you can put a command in your robots.txt file but you still have to have a sitemap.xml file on your site for it to be seen.

ROR is just an extension of RSS (which uses XML). I know of no search engines that state they support ROR extensions. Just try check e.g. Google and Yahoo:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearc...plorer-45.html and
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...y?answer=34654
No mention of ROR at all. That is in clear contrast to e.g. XML sitemaps protocol
(which also uses XML, but still different from RSS, XHTML and other XML based document standards)
Some time ago I even wrote myself an article about html/rss/ror/xml sitemaps hoping SOMEONE could tell me why they want to use ROR sitemaps

Good answers, very good tips in this thread. I must thank you for the ROR generator link, I was working around a custom solution before.
