broken links hurts?
Does broken links hurt?
I have found that some of my link partners made a mistake in putting put my site url in his site page. just like this, my url is mysite.com and he putted www.site.com so when I click on the link its 404 error!
my question is does it hurt my site?
cause I have observe since I linked to that site my keyword are neutral worst is its the ranking are not good enough! My site is still gaining some back links from more PR site but no changes from the rankings!
Is it because of the broken links or what!?

It does hurt...Why does directories don't want sites that have broken links or underconstructions? What do you think?

Broken links can hurt your site. So better check dead link in your site. You can use the tool in Rank Quest to check dead links.

Yes, of course. If I were you, create a customized 404 page for you to redirect your broken links.

Broken links can't hurt your rankings.
This is stupidity.
If I link to some article 2 years ago, and then article was moved to another location and visitor got 404 error page - I'm not guilty because someone moved article.
I would say that this is normal, not something spammy or something like that.
But if you have some broken links on your site, you should point those links to real pages because then you save PR.

It's not a link then? Is it?
Well be sure to check for broken links. As links are the only source through which bots visit your website and index/rank them. If they are not able to follow your website then they would not index and then certainly won't rank you!

If another page was trying to link to your site and messed up the URL target for the link, then the link doesn't point to your site and won't affect your site. If the link has the corret URL target, but incorrect anchor text, it won't hurt your site, but it may or may not be helpful (depending upon what the anchor text is).
<a href="http://www.URLtarget.com">anchor text</a>

Broken links externally doesn't hurt that much. Broken links internally hurts more. However, duplicate content really hurts...especially all within the same site.

In your case, if it is broken and on another site, how does google know that he was trying to link to you? Ofcourse you will not get any credit for that,as google in any ways cant think of it as a link. If you are linking to that person, it is a link wasted!
You will not be hurt by someone else's mistake. Period.

I'm confuse! some says will not hurt some will!
Actually my keywords ranking up to now is still down! But I still keep on gaining back links through exchanging links!

Nope it won't hurt your website, but just make sure you fix the link as it could degrade the quality and structure of the website in general to the visitors, and plus you won't get no link juice from it, bu it won't effect Google rankings well it might on your site just a little bit, depends on how strong the link is, just fix it.

IMO, if the link is one of the major links in your site, it will hurt the rankings. but if it is just a link on another site I don't think it will have any impact

What I think is! "It's not your link" what I mean is, it does not hurt your site because the url is not even pointed at your site. But it will not help your site either so there is no effect.

Custom 404 pages can be a great marketing tool. This way you can tell people what is going on but still keep them on your website with the impression of "functionality" running in their mind while presenting or redirecting them to other vital parts of your online resource.

thanks guys!
well I guess it effect a bit! Actually the link is already fix and its in the right url. My rankings, well not much changes but 1 keywords went to top 10 after that.
Now some still stock on their rankings right now and hasn't back to their previous rankings.
So I am thinking of the reason why its still dropping while I still gaining backlinks from other related sites!
I reviewed google guidelines and my conclusion is that I may be linked with a bad neighborhood or a spam site!
Now I am trying to figure out that are those bad neighborhoods that I had linked.
This is really awful!!!
