The best title tag
Hi guys,
Just a quick one here: i was just wondering what the best way of using the title tag is for keywords, i've been told not to exceed 80 characters including spaces so i know that much, but is it better to include 3-4 keywords in the title tag or keep to just one main primary keyword?
Thanks in advance, Alan

It depends... for the home page IMHO is better to include several words regarding your web site's main topic.
for internal pages may be useful leave just one word, but it depends on the content of that page.
IE. If in that page you talk about Ipod, the title could be Ipod...

sitionweb is right
meta title depends on the page you are working on, but according to search engine point of view some search engine do like multiple keyword and a very heavy title, but as i look in google it usually not very much depending on the title of the page, your should concentrate according to the description of your page, irrelevant title or unnecessary use of keyword should be neglected

Right.
If in the page you talk about "A" and the title says "B" Google doesn't like...

The best title tag should be relevance to the theme of your site...
First keyword is best, second is better and so on..

do you get better recognition from SE's for having only one primary keyphrase as oppose to 3? or doesn't it matter as long as it's relevent to page content?

I've always thought you can reasonably go for two, three is doable, four is too many but it depends what you consider as different keyphrases. So if I was selling blue, red and green widgets online in the UK I'd try something like:
Widgets for sale - Buy blue, red and green widgets online in the UK
and that should fill up the title bar on Google, and allow a good mix of phrases - more than four, but then they're not massively different in the mix.
That's what I think anyway.
