how would you know if the site your exchanging links to is a quality site?

I would check Pr and look it up at marketleap.com and Alexa.com they are 2 really helpfull sites for that sort of info

I personally do a site search for their site and see how many pages are indexed and do they have results in supplemental index. If they have more pages in supplemental index then i better don't feel it's quality! Makes sense...

Check the PR, whether the site's a content site or adsense site.

LOL not sure about that. I saw sites with 230 pages or so, with only 25 pages in the main index of Google, others are in SR. Their Serps are higher than my site, they rank well with their keyphrases.

The best way to check is PR period !

Just look at the site not from an SEO perspective, but as an average web reader. Would it be a site that you would want to bookmark and come back to on a repeated basis?

Check to see what sites it links out to, if it links to spammy non relevant sites then don't execute the link exchange with it.

Check the source code and see if it is a site that uses standard HTML or does it use shockwave-flash. You don't want to be linking with an all shockwave-flash site because Googlebot won't crawl the link back to your site and it won't pass page rank. Also check it out in the Google rankings, if it ranks well for key words and phrases that you would use then it's a huge plus.

Why are you guys all so obsessed with the Google bar page rank? Don't rule it out just because it has low page rank or not many pages indexed. Page rank changes every 3 months and you might miss out on getting a link with a quality up and coming new site.

First of all, almost all the requests for swap links are not related. I had a guy the other day who wanted to swap links with a cigarettes site lol

PR is a good general indicator of trust, of course there are some sites manipulated to get high PR.

I am checking first if is a site related to my topics, after that it depends of a few more things and if the webmasters read my swap links guidelines, if not too bad.

1. Check the PR
2. Check Alexa ranking
3. Check the Age
4. Check the content. Copy paste and search on google to see if they just copy the content.
5. Most important, check to whom and how many they are linking to. If they link to spammy sites (viagra, poker??) be very careful.

check the PR! site content. Best basis is that you should be the same site! relevant is always better. the keywords you want to target should be related or the same!

- Check the site's PR.
- Check the outbound links if they have "nofollow" attribute.
- Check the SERP
- Check the site's layout

Good question, but then again quite simple. Typically a quality site will have a higher page rank, but hey just use your best judgment, but quite honestly I would do reciprocal links due to it passes less value in my opinion, and plus if you want really good traffic you'll have to get a ton of them.
