Is Google site: command accurate?

I’ve been using the Site: command on Google for about the past 6 months to see how many pages my site has inexed. For about the last 3 months it’s been about 17,000. Last month I submitted 4 sitemaps to google with a total of about 80,000urls. Google webmaster tools says my sitemaps are fine but the Site: tool still only returns 17,000 urls. Is this like the Google Link: feature where they intentionally understate what they know?

It's more of a time thing moreso than anything. One month is not that long. I would simply say give it a little more time before they crawl. Is your site new? By the sounds of it its not but I figured I would ask. Google doesn't seem to be very fast unless your site is constantly turning new content, high traffic, or high pr. Just takes time.

If there are new pages added you have to wait for them to be indexed or push the process by inbound links so that they are found faster. Except that I can only say that your sitemap was not found yet.
