How to solve duplicate page from "home page" and "index.html"

Please advise how to solve the duplicate page on home page and index.html.
Some expert suggest the setting directory index, but I do not know to do it.

Is it necessary?

My primary site has 3 different URLs pointing to the homepage (because of logical reasons such as language and "memory" of what page a visitor has opened). All these URLs have PR5 and are not in supplemental.

Use 301 redirect in your .htaccess file to redirect from index.html to /

redirect 301 /index.html http://www.domain.com/

That is indeed the best solution. It will not take you too much time to implement and will be search engine friendly without doubts.

301 Redirect. 100% sure.
DO it, and do it now.

You should have more than one too.

You need to redirect non-www, and then direct site.com/index.php to just site.com or vise-versa depending on what you want to do.

No point in having 3 pages.
