Static URLs are known to be better than Dynamic URLs because of a number of reasons:

1. Static URLs typically Rank better in Search Engines.
2. Search Engines are known to index the content of dynamic pages a lot slower compared to static pages.
3. Static URLs are always more friendlier looking to the End Users.

More information from this URL Rewriting Tool.

About the index pages don't worry you can link build for that...

Hope this information helps.....

By rewriting your dynamic urls, you must not let your site be indexed by SEs first so that your site would not have a duplicate page.

that's a good point, so I guess it's ok to loose those indexed pages(with static urls) and wait for the new pages to be indexed

any other ideas are welcome, thanks in advance!

you can set your dynamic URLs to static through your .htacces.

just add this ff code on your .htacces:

RemoveHandler .html .htm
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html

after that all of your pages will crawl and de indexed again...

Good Luck.

Any other ideas? I'm worrying about the immediate effects on my rankings after the decrease in my indexed pages.

I tried this for my blog, but I only had about 15 entries then. I'm using wordpress, so I just changed the permalinks to show .html instead of page=?.php...looks way better for the SEs since it shows more of my targeted keywords in the URL.

I generated a new sitemap and resubmitted it to google. I noticed my site was being crawled faster right after I did that (every 3 or 4 days according to webmaster central) . I also got into the first 100 results of Yahoo.
I am still a bit concerned about the duplicate content issue. .. my site disappeared from MSN's SERPs (it was previously at the 18th page)...might just be a fluke. But from where I stand , those were the immediate results.

thanks emerchantpay, I also tried this in my blog which have 6 posts back then and it got good effects on rankings.

by the way, the URLs that i will rewrite are my product pages which are currently supplemental pages. also my site, which is a sub domain, ranks only for 3-5 pages. thus, i see the need for this rewriting.

I also have a little experience re-writing dynamic URL into static. It was in about one year after I started my website. Before that I didn't even know it's better to use the simple .html pages than more safisticated and dinamic extention. I also was advised to locate my pages as close to the root as possible, that makes website more friendly to the search engines.

Then I re-wrote my dynamic pages into static. Of caurse they initially lost ranking, and get the new better ranking in a little while after that. The only think, you should remember to get rid of the old pages with duplicate content.

Since then , I try to make pages as simple as possible focusing on content.

Have a great day,
Peter

yes It would affect on your rankings because it must have to crawl it again...

but don't worry about that... because the effect of that is not for long, just continue updating your contents and gather related inbound links, later it will synchronized your pages...
