Changing to a new domain

Hello all, new here, great site!

Need a bit of advice.

I have a forum that is on a domain that has forum in the URL.

I'm looking to move the site to a more content related normal site, reviews, how-tos, blog etc and have the forum as just part of it.

Thus I want to change the domain to something more appropriate.

How can I do this without losing my current rankings, domain age factor and backlinks etc.

Thanks.

Dave.

301 redirect is only way.

Not going to transfer rankings right away either... if its ranking well and has god traffic don't move it, to late.

I think the best bet is to do what ToddW has mentioned above, at least for the first few months. I would look at your log files to check out who your biggest referral links are and email them to change or update the link to your new site. This in combination with the redirect should minimize the damage although rankings usually slip by 1 or 2 pageranks.

But again, if you have a ton of traffic and a high page rank, don't even bother moving it.

If you got a good pagerank then don't change the domain name unless you really have to.

I changed domain name for a PR4 site a while ago and I did a 301 redirect. It took some time before the new site got PR4, but the search engines did find the site almost immediately. If you got a PR above 4 then I would not do a transfer at all.

I agree with them 301 redirect is the way to change from one domain to another... If your site has a higher PR don't change your domain 'coz you can't get the present PR of your domain... If you do a 301 redirects only some PR juice is being transferred not all example if you have PR 4 then you redirect it.. I think your domain will be just PR 2 or less than PR 4..
