As a small business person, I think one of the problems is risk. We know there's a reward for good SEO, but hiring someone to do it for you provides little guarantee of good results.
I read about SEO and follow some of the trends because I think it's both interesting and important. But I have little time to do the nitty-gritty. I would hire someone, but at the rates I could afford (~$300/month), there's the question of whether I would be getting anything worth the cost.
So to all the SEO's out there, if you want to earn more business, make sure your site passes a credibility test. I'm sorry to say that most of the SEO sites that I've looked at don't. I could provide a litany of advice, but I'll just give my top two:
(1) Do a basic spelling and grammar check of your site. If you know your English is poor, copy and paste it into Word or some other software with built-in spelling and grammar checking. Nothing strips away credibility faster than bad English.
(2) Offer case studies of your services. Don't just link to the customers' sites. Link to a Google search that uses their keywords. Provide at least a surface-level description of the services that you provided to get them ranked well. Before and after numbers would be effective as well.
I could go on and on but I'll end my rant here. :-)
