301 Redirects

I watched a recent SEOmoz Whiteboard Friday video regarding 301 redirects and how to use them. I was hoping it would touch on the subject of domain 301's but it was really concerning internal pages.

Basically I am trying to find out if 301 redirecting a domain is considered black hat or frowned upon by the search engines.

I currently have 3 domains which get a fair amount of type in traffic but they all go to a domain registrars holding page at the moment. I have a 4th domain with an established web site. I was thinking of redirecting the 3 domains to the 4th to make use of the type in traffic as all 4 domains are relevant, but I am worried that it may have a negative impact that I am not aware of.

Check these podcast out. I downloaded both of them recently and listened to them while driving. Both have some very enlightening information from 2 of Google's best programmers... Vanessa Fox and Amanda Camp.

I forget which one touches on the 301 redirects, but one of these ladies actually stated that 301's are good if you are seeking permanent redirection.
