Mahalo And DMOZ: Link Rot Issues

Rich Skrenta, who started DMOZ, but has since moved on to bigger, brighter things, looks at Mahalo.

At this point though I'm thinking SEO has gotta be dead as a startup business model. It was kind of unknown stuff in 2003 but now the cat's out of the bag. It seems like the last attempt of web 2.0 sites that aren't able to get social adoption is to start flooding the Google index with tag landing page spam or a crappy template page for every restaurant in the country.

It doesn't look like Mahalo is taking off. I submitted a link about two months ago and the category that I submitted it to is dead in the water. My link hasn't been added, but more importantly no one else has even submitted a link.

Mahalo was a bad idea a few months back and even a worse idea today. It adds nothing of any value and will never amount to anything more than a simple novelty.

The only reason it showed up on anyone's radar in the first place was due to JC bashing an industry and calling it "link bait". Now that that's fading it's sitting right about where it should be in terms of popularity.

The alexa will soon rise due to the contest Jason launched. People are supposed to install Mahalo Follow and use it when doing searches.
Then the traffic will fall.

Hey, I suggested a link and it's up!! How did I get response? Well... I blogged about the 5 dead links on the climate change page that was 'human-updated' this morning. I also pointed out that it was missing the #1 most authoritative blog climate change blog.

Mahalo keeps a list of changes, so if you visit http://www.mahalo.com/Climate_Change?action=history you'll see the flurry of changes. I guess someone reads my blog.

I feel so powerful!
