how to promote a website withoud depending on search engines

I have asked myself, what webmaster will make if search engines would not exist. What promotion methods they will use, how they will make a site popular?

I want to hear some opinions and advice on this topic, it would be constructive for all ourselves.

Email marketing, all kind of adwords - google, yahoo, msn.... banners in other sites, articles in digg etc...

Are you asking, how can you "promote" your site without "promoting" it? Because no advertising means no promotion. And with advertising I mean, web banner ads, word of mouth, guest posting, directory submission and way more other options (depends on your creativity i would say).

I am sorry, i miss to see your point... non paid adv'... so why wont i open a website with free stuff in it.. just email me your address and i will send you whatever you want.. living in a world without money or gread.. oh, i wish it was so....

I don't need this for me...i opened this post to help other people who are new..and not well informed where to invest, what types of advertising...first step to get a site popular.

Ok !! now i see your point, its a good point, but still, if you wanna promot your website, it usualy means that you wanna make money out of it, and to make money - you have to spend money !!

The problem these days is that all people are making seo to rank on SE's toget traffic.

Well if the SE's didn't exist, what other ways will be used to promote.

For example i have a friend that is having a product made for the people who are searching to buy a car on internet.

He want's to make sales and not to wait until he will have traffic from SE's.

This is just an exmaple, let's discuss on this.

I would have told him to open an ebay store and sell his things there, im pretty sure that after a while he wont even bother to oparate a singel website.. Ebay is the best market, you already have all the traffic you need !!

every product have keywrods... if you have a product, even its a softwer, you gotta have keywords for it, maybe i got you all wrong, if i will knopw whats the product is exactly, then i can help you research for it.

if there was no SEs around, then the best way to promote a site was to invent the first SE in the world and give your self a big link on every page.

all traffic are going to be referral from other site.. though its possible.. theres no room for seo...
