If it's a signature link, he could go back to the forum, go into his control panel and remove his signature from his profile. If not, there is nothing he can do except get some stronger links that might overwhelm that link. If he could get a v7n Directory listing that would probably rise higher in the SERPs than his forum link. But honestly he shouldn't worry about it, people are going to talk crap about you, you have to stay on track with your business plan and not let negative people drag you down. Look at the criticism objectively and honestly, if it's legitimate then make changes, then contact the person and thank him for helping you improve your web site.

Thats why forums exist...for discussion. Anyway, if what it was commented on that forum is no true at all you might want to suggest to your client to signup on that forum and comment back with proofs. Than he might politely want to ask the forum owner to disable the link since what the OP or whoever commented his services/company had no proofs and is speculating.

The idea might sound crazy, but if the guy who commented your clients company is speculating i believe he was not even going to ask to do that, instead he would have already signed up and commented back to prove that the op is speculating.

Other than that, just pray the forum owner go without funds and get his account suspended, or his DB corrupted in some way

I think you can't decrease the SERP of your site in just a short time.. Because thats has been already crawl by the bots..Maybe just try to contact the forum admin and asked them if they can grant you some favor to clear those crap and negative post about your site..
