something interesting with search engine ranking

I have an old domain which is ranking well for some very competitive keywords.

Now i started to promote the link make some link baiting articles got a lot of unique natural links, and i have seen that after this the site was dropped on the specified keywords on place like 100-200. (it ranked on #12).

Now after i didn't make links, the site stabilized and it's on #4.

What is causing this?

IMO. I think is because of domain age. Google is more on domain's age in terms of good rankings... but with exceptions not all domain's age can have this rankings, it depends on status of domain even if it is old...

You didn't saw my point.
I don't understand why the site was dropped back when he started to gain new links and then in 4-5 days was back.
