Focus on search engine optimization to increase traffic

The Rotten Tomatoes team observed that most people searched for movie reviews by searching on the movie name or actors in a film, not for a movie review itself. Furthermore, searches for movies occurred in the greatest quantities around an anticipated release or controversial movie. Therefore Rotten Tomatoes architected the site to give each individual movie its own Rotten Tomatoes mini-site to boost natural search rankings.

Makes perfect sense to me (the way they set up their site for SEO purposes.) I quite like RottenTomatoes.com - It was a very good idea.

Rotten tomatoes is one of the pioneer review sites in the internet. As Rottentomatoes grows bigger and bigger, others just do little SEO jobs because the site is too popular.

In they UK there´s a site called moneysupermarket.com and the owners are going to float it for between 800 million and 1 billion pounds sterling... The thing is that over 50% of their traffic come from Search Engines... It´s another example of how a successful SEO strategy can have a really high value.

It's a great site - I've always loved comparing the Critic reviews with the public ones - you end up finding people that have similar tastes to you and you can decide if it's better to wait for DVD release or not.

Nice find on the article - it makes for an interesting case study.

Although their situation of raising "...a little funding ($1.01M) during the boom..." isn't likely to be replicated these days as investors and Venture Capitals aren't about to throw that sort of money at an unknown site, there is plenty in the tactics used that can be scaled down to small sites.
