Buying the correct domain name

Is it a bad idea to have two different domain names pointing to the same web site content.

An official domain name relating to the company name and a specific for domain name the product.

Example:

www.companyname.us and www.product-xyz.us - Both with the same content.

As far as I can see a lot of top search ranking pages are contains the keywords in the domain name.

What do you think and what would you suggest?

Well I'm not a huge SEO guy so I don't know how it affects SEO (which really leads me to wonder why I'm answering this

).

But I've seen this done with big companies. They will buy domains that are general and then these will point to the main site.

I recommend the use of a 301 permanent redirect for this.

Agreed. This would not confuse the search engines with you running duplicate content - and thus penalizing you.

301 is the best suggestion. Actually I had found two website with different domain name but with same content and both of them gain PR. The .com have a PR$ and the .net have PR2.
