How often do you change your site?
Keeping the content in place or enhancing the content notwithstanding, how long do you stick with the current look and feel of your site? I know a branded site needs to protect the integrity of the brand but when is change a good thing and not?

You should change the content if there are not any users any more who are visiting the page...

changing content of the site depends on its status. if your having a bad results on visitors, then changing the site's content must be done, still it depends. when your site has always been popular to visitors and keep on coming back to it, then no changes should be done with the site, instead, keep on doing updates and improvements.

Depends if there are news updates for my blog or if there are newly added products for my e-commerce site.

Depends on the site..If its shopping site and there are new products then it needs to be featured somewhere in main page..

For the sake of this conversation, it would be a commerce site with product updates that do occur, But the UI has not changed structurally in 4 years. The site owner is worried that any changes may affect a decent conversion rate. Do you think users go to the site, see that nothing has changed and keep going? although there might have been product updates? I think I would be apt to do that.

Design wise, not that often as site familiarity to users is really something IMO. Content, as needed

If it is the UI design you want to change at least make it as similar as possible to the original design so that users don't have trouble browsing/using your site.

I tweak my sites about once every month or so. It seems like there is always something minor which can use some improvement.

I always watch for when Google indexes my site, each time I add new pictures and remove the "old" ones, aswell as fine tuning my text as I see fit. I think this keeps the site fresh in Google's eyes. I could just be wasting my time though hehe

The thinking might be that a user sees that nothing has changed, even though there might have been product updates, and does not stop to look. Bear in mind too, that currently at least in G and MSN we're #1 organically for the branded keyword term.

SEO Myth:You need to update your site frequently.
SEO Myth about Frequent Updates....
Frequent updates to your pages may increase the search engine crawl rate, but it won't increase your rankings. If your site doesn't need to change, don't change it just because you think the search engines will like it better. They won't. In fact, some of the highest ranking sites in Google haven't been touched in years...

But because the brand is the brand, making a change wouldn't be done for the sake of the SE's it would be done for the consumer/user. Organically the sites ranking should invariably not change. However we are talking about the UI and not necessarily content.

It really depends to be honest. Some people change the look of their site once every few months and others change their look once every few years.
